The hoodie

Monsieur Lacenaire, young, yet famous Parisian brand shrungs off our chlildhood traumas deciding all that pocket thing was really practical. Along the same line of their summer collection, fresh, Monsieur Lacenaire presents a regressive though chic hoodie. Knitted in France with Egyptian cotton, this hoodie hides a secret: a back pocket in which it can be folded entirely.

Two colorways are available: “marin” (blue and white stripes) or “marine” with a madras lining. My choice goes for the first, stripes really render well and perfectly match raw jeans. More about the back, check at the shoulders finish with stripes finished with a central seam.

Once turned into a cushion, the hoodie multiple purposes: you can sleep on it, hit someone, play football or rugby, hide things into it…

The test

This hoodie has a perfect fitting and it is extremely soft. Well of course, it is pricey, and for those who are used to buy their hoodies at American Apparel, checking out will be a weid moment. But I guess this hoodie does not target the same persons. It is the kind of rare pieces you like to own, symbol of a creative commitment from people who know how taking risks and revisit urban classics, like Garance Broca, Monsieur Lacenaire’s designer. Tested and approved!

Many adaptations of The Great Gatsby were made over the years. We will decrypt two of them: the 1974 directed by Jack Clayton featuring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow and of course, the one released this week by Baz Luhrmann starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Careil Mulligan.

Ralph Lauren took care of 1974 Gatsby’s suits. His work on such a movie allowed Mr Ralph Lauren promoted him among the highest realms of international tailoring. In 2013, a brand we all know being the most emblematic of Americans’ formal wardrobe, Brooks Brothers dressed Leonardo DiCaprio. This is a real match between two high-end tailors to compare these two version of the Great Gatsby.

The 1974 versus 2013 match, Robert versus Leo, Ralph Lauren versu Brooks Brothers, Gatsby versus Gatsby can now start.

The countryside weekend

Leaving for a weekend in a cabriolet, no way wearing the same blue or grey suit as during the week. Here, Robert Redford opted for a brown suit as Leonardo DiCaprio chose a 3 pieces beige suit. Note that Leo would rther prefer 3 pieces suits all along his Gatsby incarnation. Robert’s boots are perfect for a weekend in the English countryside. Leonardo’s boater hat adds a holiday/relaxation touch to his outfit as the cane adds some dandy – like he needed that. Robert’s outfit suits more for a autumn/winter weekend as Leonardo’s is more adapted to spring/summer.

The Rendez-vous

A specialist may have advised Gatsby to dress on his first meeting, the guy just don’t kid with that! The 3 pieces linen suit is emblematic from the 1920s, both Gatsby follow the rule. To add a touch of color to some dull outfit, bet on a pocket square, cufflinks or the tie. By this way, we love Leonardo’s club tie.

In both cases, the actors wear what’s called a pin collar. It is a small bar allowing to raise the tie knot, its edges can be seen on the pictures. Generally, it is possible to ask for this specific collar for tailored shirts, with small rounded eyelets embroidered like buttonholes.

The reception

The ideal occasion to get your smoking out of the closet. A tuxedo is certainly the hardest kind of suit to wear properly. Constrained by codes, this outfit don’t offer many options. Both Gatsby follow the rule: a silk/satiny small notched lapel and a black bow tie. A smoking has to be worn with a white bib shirt. Collar can be both “wing” like Robert Redford’s one and “turndown” like Leonardo DiCaprio. I rather prefer wing collars, matching greatly bib shirts. Three pieces smoking are quite rare, but that’s no really part of the tuxedo’s philosophy: a faux pas? Almost.

Conclusion

End of the match, let’s count points, and the victory goes to Leonardo DiCaprio, even with a flagrant faux pas for the smoking. Enjoy your movie guys ;)

Here is my sportswear outfit. This is a jacket I’ve found at the new boutique N°42, Paris, and it perfectly suits the “active” athmosphere of this series. Its colors are bright, and its animal pattern really turns a simple windrunner into a very “strong” and interesting piece. I had kind of a crush on these silver vintage runing sneakers. Not convinced by the running trend? I can assure how essential it was to wear stylish and comfortable shoes to stride across Barcelona back and forth as we did. This pair was the perfect companion for such a journey.

Let’s focus on the outfit, which is clearly ideal to chill out during the weekend. Spring is here, so I’ve still covered my neck with a light scarf but as I was wearing a cashemere and wool blend sweater, I thought I could leave my jacket in the closet. As for the sneakers, I’m still betting on high-tops while adding a touch of color.

Just a word about those trousers, basically we could call them premium track pants. Maybe some can find the term overrated, but wait until your try them on. As soon as I put them, I thought wewere going to share a bit of the road together. The fabric is really soft and sturdy and the hybrid, track/chic trousers side is perfectly handled.

Why such a deflection? For this jacket. I’m not used to bold picks. And I can easily identify myself with the French stylistic legacy. But when I discovered this jacket I thought myselft I had to make something with it! Short, rock, varsity style, croco-like… all in all shiny.

It is less to say that I had to fight with Romano to have these New Balance on one of my shootings. The guy even wrote about them, he could just not help doing it, like if I lifted his target’ skirt in the playground. All the same I pay tribute to him, he was right about this pair: “it’s killer!” like he said.

Starts with this shooting, the spring looks series. Let’s remove layers, sturdy materials and add patterns and colors like this polka dots chambray shirt or this quirky lightweight scarf. Tortoise sunglasses have my favour this season.

Jeans with a trench-coat is a timeless match, even more when both pieces have a perfect fit. J Brand selvedge denim really fits well and the short-lenght trench-coat has a contemporary fit. Oxford boat shoes from Sperry add a quirky touch and a breath of fresh air. Spring is nearly arrived guys!

Ties are much too formal for end-of-the-year parties, let’s dare a nice bow tie and wear it proudly with a white shirt. The corduroy jacket is a must have for this period, even more in burgundy. It is usually not that easy to match patent shoes, exception is done for this type of occasion.

I this series I could wear a fully-costomized cashmere sweater from MoodByMe. Indeed, MoodByMe allows choosing the color, the shoulders shape, the collar, the sleeves… then you enter you measurement for the fit and receive you fully-customized sweater or cardigan few days later. For this one I have chosen a v-neck cashmere sweater with leather elbow pads in grey tones.

This may be something related to the fact of posing with my father but I opted for a comfortable and “rock” outfit. The shawl collar jacket is for comfort and the jeans, boots and scarf worth for the “rock” side. Once again, I went to the womenswear area to find it. By the way, Romano did also spot it at the other side of France. With the winter approaching, boots are more than ever actual! These fine and sober ones perfectly match with jeans.

Jean-Jacques has chosen a casual-chic outfit. Ok it’s sunday, but never fool around with the outfit. Even on sundays I’m used to see my father well dressed, this shooting is no exception. So, for Jean-Jacques it is denim shirt and chinos. Why a denim shirt? Because it is not for young admen only. This one’s raw aspect gives more soberness and maturity. The lightweight scarf adds a touch of dandy and the shoes some quirky thanks to their rust color.
